Street Food Cinema

In the middle of Hollywood, at one of its many local parks, a movie screen has been erected overnight. Speakers pulsate with the sound of the cover band, BoomBox Heroes, playing a kick-ass rendition of the Journey song “Don’t Stop Believing,” prompting the incoming crowds to join in by belting out the verses they remember. Mouth watering food trucks, each offering their own specialty, line the outskirts of the field creating an almost instant concession stand of culinary deliciousness that one can only find in Los Angeles. This is Street Food Cinema!

Starting in May of every year, Angelenos file into local parks, rooftops and even cemeteries to watch classic films on the big screen outdoors. While each one has its own special draw, my personal favorite is the Street Food Cinema. Combining two LA staples (film and food trucks) Street Food Cinema makes me feel nostalgic for the days when you would pile everyone into the station wagon and go to the drive-in movie theater, except instead of cars, you bring your blankets and lawn chairs. Don’t forget to bring the beer!

Things I Wish Someone Would Have Told Me….

Take an Uber, Lyft or taxi to the park. These showings are almost always sold out so parking at the local park can be a beast. Easier to have an Uber, Lyft or taxi drop you off a block away and then just walk in.

Check the weather. While Los Angeles has amazing weather it is a desert and the temperature does drop considerably at night. So dress appropriately. I was freezing in late April, but they do have blankets you can buy.

You can bring in your own lawn chair. Chairs are not provided but are welcome. Just make sure that it is no more than 6 inches off the ground. No Tall Backs! Limited supply of rental chairs are available at the entrance.

Cash and Credit Cards are accepted by all vendors. These food trucks are all delicious so make sure you try a few.

Outside food and drink are permitted. If you don’t want to taste the delicious food trucks, just bring a picnic. Outside food and beverages (yes, that means alcohol) are allowed. No coolers over 9 quartzs. Please clean up after yourself and be responsible.

Tickets are non-refundable. Unfortunately they do not refund any tickets, but as a courtesy they will reallocate your ticket to another night.

You can bring your dog to almost any of the showings! Almost all parks are dog friendly, so make sure to check the event listing and always clean up after your pup! It’s the law in LA County.

Adult beverages. You don’t need them...but they are allowed. Just drink responsibly.

Non-professional camera. Cell phones work best. Take plenty of pictures and share with your friends on social media. Remember to tag @streetfoodcinema.
