Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Part 1 & 2

It’s a crisp fall night in New York City, weaving through the crowds in Times Square we make our way to Broadway’s Lyric Theatre. As soon as we scan our tickets and cross the threshold we know we’ve entered a very magical place. The theatre is gorgeous and while waiting in line for snacks I start to notice the subtle details from ceiling to floor: H logos printed on the wallpaper and carpet, phoenix light fixtures and even a patronus room helps set the tone for the show. As I make my way into the theatre to settle in, I navigate around children and adults who are rushing to their seats dressed in cloaks and draped in red and yellow scarves. The excitement is palpable, the lights dim and the newest Harry Potter adventure begins.

Smashing sales records and racking up 6 Tony Awards, including Best Play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts 1 & 2 is taking Broadway by storm! No expense is spared in recreating Harry’s wizardly world, from the detailed renovation of this legendary theatre to the staggering illusions that left the entire crowd wondering, “How did they do that?” This is the must see play of the year. Set nineteen years after the last Harry Potter book left off, Harry now has a son (Albus) and he is best friends with Malfoy’s son (Scorpius)! Together they must battle evil through...aww no spoilers! Just go see the show, it will leave you spellbound.

Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me

The crowds are pretty real. This is a 887 seat theatre and they open the doors only one hour before the performance begins. That means you will be waiting in lines. The security check is fast but if you want to get refreshments, go to the bathroom or buy merchandise those lines can be long too.

If you are late you are out of luck. There is a strict no admittance to the theatre policy once the performance start. Leave yourself at least 20 minutes to find your seat and get settled in. Otherwise you will have to wait in the lobby until intermission.

If you are tall try and get an aisle seat. I am a tall man at 6’5 and I was pretty cramped. My knees pushed up against the seat in front of me and I was worried about the much shorter lady behind me being able to see, so I leaned forward the entire show. Aisle seats alleviate much of that for me because I can stretch my legs out to the side. Also, since I am on the outside I only have one person behind me and they are looking in towards center stage, not at the back of my head meaning I don’t have worry about them being able to see.

They serve alcohol! It is served at the refreshment stand. It is very pricey though. Drink responsibly or you will be revomed from the theatre.

Go to the bathroom first. Make sure you go to the bathroom first thing when you arrive and during intermission. The both shows run around 2 hours and 40 minutes (with a 20 minute intermission.) and lines can be daunting, especially during intermission. Remember, once the show starts they won’t let anyone in, so don’t be late or you could find yourself locked out.

No phones, photos or video during the show. Pretty basic stuff. Turn off your phones and just enjoy all that Harry Potter magic!

Free Souvenirs! Make sure you pick up a playbill on your way in and your Harry Potter and the Cursed Child pin on your way out. They are free!

Hiding in plain sight! This theatre was especially remodeled for this show. So make sure you look around, if you are a real Harry Potter fan you might notice a few things!

Things You Will Need
